
Eat Africa
If you are visiting Africa, it’s not just the relief and climate, but also the people and their culture. Here we are going to walk you through some African food that you will find interesting. Especially in the West Africa.
At your first visit to West Africa, you will be fascinated with various kinds of food. The food is the same across the West African borders, but are made in different ways and has different names for each.
Let us look at Nigeria foods: In Nigeria, you will be faced with many kinds of recipes, ranging from licking, drinking, chewing and swallowable foods.
An example of a drinking food in Nigeria is Akamu. Is made from (maize). It has two colours, depending on the colour of the maize. Either white or yellow. When done it is molten and thick. Usually eaten in the morning. It is served hot. With sugar added to give it a desired taste. It is better and richer when mixed with milk. It could be eaten with Beans, Akara(Bean cake) and bread. The Akam(Pap) is very rich in carbohydrates, amist other ingredients added to it.
Another one o. the line is the Akara(bean cake) made from beans. It is made in a cake form, but in its case, it is fried instead of being baked. It is very nutritious, depending on the ingredients added during the mixing before being fried. After fried, it gets caked and turns colour to light brown. It is mostly eaten across the country, in the morning and in the evenings. Sold at the roadsides. It is eaten alone, eaten with bread, with Agidi(another food made from corn ) We will talk about that later.
Let’s talk about the Nigeria soups. The most common soup in Nigeria, you will find almost everywhere and every part of Nigeria is the Egusi(melon soup) And the draw Soup or Ogbolor soup, then maybe find Okra soup too. If not, there are a lot of soup recipes in Nigeria that you will love. And you can’t just stop licking your fingers. In the Yoruba land, they have the Ewedu soup. Made with the Ewedu leaf, it is a slippery soup. It is mainly used to swallow the Amala food. The Yoruba ethnic of Nigeria is known for this. It is their ceremonial food. It is widely eaten among the Yorubas. During festivals, traditional feasts, marriages etc. the Amala and Ewedu soup is being served. The Ewedu soup is mostly mixed with a tomato stew made with palm oil.
Now the Hausa recipe. The Hausa major food is the Tuwo, especially the Tuwo Chinkafa. It is a rice food. Made by boiling the rice, and later pound it to smooth. It had its special species of rice for it. It is served with its soup…… Apart fro the Tuwo, there are lot more to be mentioned in the North of Nigeria. They have many drinking food. Made from corn or peas. Let’s not go too deep in the Hausa food.
Let’s quickly look at another group of people and their food. The Igbo people of Nigeria. These people are distributed everywhere. They are found in every part of the country. They are basically in the Eastern part of Nigeria. But due to the search for a greener pasture, they travel and settle nationwide. They have variety of foods. In a nutshell, I will most common Nigerian foods is the Igbo recipe. The Egusi soup is an Igbo soup made with melon. In other words, it is called melon soup. The Oha soup, the bitter leaf soup…. Ofe-onugbu, The Ofe-Nsala….pepper soup., the Edè soup, The Banga soup….Ofe-aku, The draw Soup…..Ofe-ogbolor. All of these soups has their special ways of preparing them.
